With most or all a zoos income coming from visitors, 2020 and 2021 have been extremely tough on our zoos and aquariums and the amazing animals that live in them. Feeding the animals alone costs some zoos thousands of pounds a week. Colchester Zoo spends in excess of £25,000 per day running the zoo. Chester Zoo, the largest zoo in the UK, runs 80 conservation projects in 30 countries but costs more than £1.6 million a month to run, with 97% of its income coming from visitors (2 million visitors in 2019). This guide was borne out of these bizarre and difficult times. We hope we can help these special places by shining a light on their plight and the importance of people continuing to visit them.
